GCC Pavilion – EXPO Doha
Doha, QATAR, October 2023

SIMMETRICO curated the Design and Build of the GCC Pavilion project, that aims to be a cultural landmark within Expo DOHA 2023: a manifesto of resilience, innovation and sustainability.
Six sources converge in a single center to narrate the cohesion of the six GCC countries, united in a single destiny, to share the same goal.

The springs converge through channels, a symbol of man’s wisdom in leading the precious resource, fertilizing the earth and creating a fountain with a continuous flow that envelops a bronze sphere, signifying the value of natural resources and their centrality in the process of change.

Monumental Fountain

The fountain designed by the architect Mario Botta and inaugurated in 2005 is located in front of the entrance to the Sanpaolo Museum complex in Monselice.
Over the years, its functional restoration became necessary.
In fact, the lack of constant and appropriate maintenance caused degradation and the consequent proliferation of algae, mud and insects.
The restoration work that brought the fountain back to its original splendor was recently completed.

Serravalle Designer Outlet

THIS IS WATERCUBE 5.9

This is a showreel of some WATERCUBE’s realizations. Creativity has always been a distinctive Made in Italy trait. The challenge that moves Watercube has been, since its birth, to achieve “greatness” not only by reviving the nobility of traditional Italian fountain makers through modern eyes, but also looking for the virtuous combination between creativity and engineering required in water control. Our “water architectures” are the result of an elaborated process, in which experience, technical skills, versatility and inventive blend in together, adding life, shape and substance to ideas.

/ biomimetics

Albert Einstein quotes:
Whatever you may think of, nature did it before”.

Throughout the time, many took inspiration from Mother Nature in order to capture its essence, secrets and spectacular beauty. Today, this approach can be universally recognized also in architecture and design as “biomimetic“: a mix of biology and technology for the purpose of solving complex human problems.

By observing nature, it is possible to find efficient solutions fostering sustainable growth and harmony between humans and environment.

/ engineering

What distinguishes Watercube is the achievement to control the unpredictable through technology, determining new shapes.

The use of virtual modelling tool is an evidence of Watercubeís attitude of planning before actual executions. This is how we are able to shape and adjust water in unusual roles, creating the illusion of breaking nature rules.

We believe in continuous research to always improve the know-how gained with years of experience.

/ sustainability

For us it is not enough to deliver a simple working product, we want our customers to benefit from pollution reduction and closed water loop system for less water and power consumption. Fountains that are properly designed can totally find a place within sustainable projects.

This is our approach and the key themes of our philosophy: water preservation (recirculation treatments using non-polluting alternatives to chemical treatments); energy savings (control systems, LED lighting, air-water combination systems); reduced environmental impact (recyclable materials, minimum polluting impact) and environmental benefits (filtration / air ionization, micro climatic comfort).

/ concept design

The water theater designed and developed by Watercube for the Savoy Royal Palace in Venaria Reale is one of the most significant milestones in the history of the company. It is the flagship of a new way of conceiving the water culture combined with the Italian tradition and the latest technologies in the reference market.

Our work was part of the larger refurbishment project of the Court of Honour of the Royal Palace. The Fountain represents a hunting scene perfectly fitting the local context (genius loci) of an area that is prevalently dedicated to hunting.

/ schematic design

The bed of the new large fountain develops on an elliptical plan with the axes aligned with the two oldest building of the royal residence. The bed is made up of 192 stone slabs under which the nozzles and a spectacular lighting system are installed to give life to the water theatre. The basin is made of pebbles matching the original paving of the old fountain.
96 nozzles are arranged alternately to the slabs, spraying water jets at the considerable height of 10 m (33 ft.), which fits harmoniously well with the majestic architectural facility. An intangible ìmisty curtainî reflects the light and flatters thousand gorgeous shades.

/ design development

We tested the water consumption and the total electric power requirement considering the characteristics of the interactive nozzles, lighting fixtures and pumping system. Special care has been taken to define all the characteristics of the hydraulic and electrical systems (studying the flowcharts), the wall structures and the correct arrangement of the technical room.

In-depth details, and architectural section drawings are extracted from concept design to allow proper installation of the systems. The water performance depends on the positioning of the technical systems and the resulting geometry of the architectural elements involved, such as stones, overflow edges, and collection drains.

/ construction

In the implementation phase we follow-up step by step of the work progress from the initial visit to the site area to the final testing and commissioning up to the official handover of the work.

For the Royal Palace in Venaria, a detailed time schedule was followed. After the excavations and the realization of the foundations, we proceeded with the installation of the pipes and cable ducts, coordinating all work on site.

Watercube has designed the nozzles and lights in the elliptical channel, which runs around the bed of the fountain, as well as all the hydraulic and electrical components in the equipment room, the thinking heart of the fountain.

/ programming and sync

During the off-line programming, the main water and light choreography is defined and followed by an on-site implementation phase. During the latter they are transferred and applied to the fountain, establishing timing and sequences straight insitu.

This transforms the installation into a ìmusical fountain.î The water jets seem to dance with the selected songs and melodies controlled from a DMX console (Digital MultipleX). Perfectly synchronizing the water jets, the power of the pumps, and the colours of the LED lights with the songs you want, you can create exciting effects.
